CAN YOU TELL WHICH INVENTIONS ARE GOING TO "MAKE IT"?

The simple answer is "No". That's why we support every invention with 100% enthusiasm. Every invention we deal with has the potential to make it big. And we've proved it.

We can generally identify ideas that have a sufficiently high combination of a) usefulness and b) design economy
to warrant promotion. In other words, ideas that solve a genuine problem with a practical design. These, we are happy to represent. Others, we show the door. There's no point wasting everybody's time.

But even with an idea with excellent market potential, it is a long journey from the first time an invention is sketched out to when a license is signed off. There are many variables involved in the development of an idea that are totally outside anybody's control:

  • Legal issues -it may just be that your idea is too close to an existing patented design.
  • Financial issues - lack of funding; you need at least £3000 to see an invention through, and that's an absolute minimum.
  • Market issues - right product, wrong time; you may just have missed the boat in whichever sector your product is located.

The case studies below show precisely why you should always be optimistic as an inventor. People need new products, and manufacturers need new ideas. And, with the right professional backing, ideas can make money for the inventor.

A PREMIUM PRODUCT TO A PRESTIGIOUS PRODUCER

2005

Product name:
Product type:

Licensee:
Point of interest:

"Everflow" hosing system
Garden hose
Virtually impossible to stop flow of water
Emplas
Product solves a supposedly trivial problem - but one which every one knows and hates

After a 3 year wait for a Patent, this ingenious invention was licensed in its entirety to Emplas, one of the UK's most prestigious producers of hosing, in September 2005.

The Everflow (a brand name conceived by Emplas) provides uninterrupted water flow in the face of the many potential causes of stoppage: kinks, snags, cars being parked on it etc. Thanks to a hardened inner core running the length of the hosing, you can literally tie the Everyflow in knots and retain water pressure. Inventor Paul Scargill first contacted Inventions in 2000.

The product is soon to be rolled out to a major DIY retailer.

A TIGHT SQUEEZE FOR FIXING INVENTION WITH LOW INVENTOR FUNDS

2004

Product name:
Product type:
Feature:
Licensee:
Point of interest:

Tight n' level
Kitchen worktop fixing widget
Allows a perfectly-level fit between kitchen worktops
DP Bakewell Limited
Success snatched from the jaws of defeat with very low inventor budget

The Tight n' Level is a fixing device that allows craftsmen to line up kitchen worktops so they are exactly level. This is notoriously difficult to do in the trade, and the licensees, DP Bakewell, were first off the mark in realising the commercial impact this product could make.

What stands out about this particular project is the fact that the inventor had very little funds to invest in the project, and yet the idea has still made it into production. The legal side of the project was covered, but the marketing budget was virtually nil; we had to be very resourceful, and our efforts paid off.

2004

Product name:
Product type:

Point of interest:

Talking Kone, Talking Box and Talking Knotice
Portable warning unit for use in cleaning in public areas
Gives spoken warning when approached
International; including Reward Manufacturing Company Limited & Medico Industries Inc
economical design + genuine product need = market success

Licenses have been negotiated to produce the Talking Kone in UK, US, and South East Asian markets.

The Talking Kone is a safety product which falls very much into line with the increasing power of Health and Safety regulations. A Patent was granted on 29th December 2004; Patents remain pending for its sister products, the Talking Box and Talking Knotice, which are based on the ceentral proximity/audible warning concept.

Designed for use in restaurants, airports and shopping centres, the Talking Kone uses a proximity sensor and an audio speaker to warn away unwary pedestrians when they step too close to a slippery floor, or cracked tiles, or an overhead danger: "beware, slippery floor!"

Trialled at Heathrow Airport and other high-profile public areas, the Talking Kone has proved a major selling success.

Onkor Hard Surfaces
Kitchen worktop material
Anti-bacterial combined with antique feel and look
Onkor Hard Surfaces
A healthy business founded on providing added value to kitchen worktop materials

Onkor - one of our earliest projects, and a product we liked so much we installed it in our offices!

A brilliant idea from a private inventor for an anti-bacterial kitchen surface lead to the formation of Onkor Solid Surfaces in 1995.

An ingenious blend of natural minerals and unique resin binder upped the ante in the kitchen worktop sector. Quality and utility: the unique Onkor resin keeps itself clean from germs thanks to its anti-bacterial constituent , emits a perfume too- and, thanks to its granular construction –looks and feels exactly like stone. Bringing the best of modern and old together.
