INVENTOR SERVICES COSTINGS OVERVIEW
revised September 2005

This is intended as a guide only. Costs depend on what market your invention is aimed at, and how complex it is. Talk to us on 01296 728 136 first.

The crucial thing to remember is that it makes no financial sense for you to cherry-pick; to arrange a Patent Search yourself, for example, and then come to us for other services. The process runs smoothly and cost-effectively only if it is managed centrally. If you don't believe us, go ahead and try it alone. And if you do, then don't hesitate to come back to us (as some inventors have done to our relief) and we will be delighted to help you.

There are three main fixed costs involved in the protection and marketing of your invention:
1) Patent search
2) Technial drawings & marketing presentation
3) Patent Application

Inventions charges a prenegotiated percentage of any funds you receive as a result of a license negotiated with a manufacturer.

1. PATENT SEARCH

You need to start with a Patent Search - to see if your idea stands a realistic chance of standing out from the competition, and is therefore legally protectable. A Patent Search normally costs in the region of £500-£1000.

Once the Patent Search has been done we can discuss whether we think it is worth moving forward.

If so, we need to optimise the design of your invention to maximise its:
a) legal protectability
b) commercial viability
c) operational value

2. TECHNICAL DRAWINGS & MARKETING PRESENTATION

A skilled designer will compile both a series of technical drawings and a 3D colour visualisation of your idea. This can often turn out to be a challenging and long-winded process of refinement, particularly with complex products. Our sales team also need marketing materials with which to attract manufacturers. Inventions will commission a written, illustrated presentation - including targeted market research. Usual cost of drawings and marketing work: £1500-£2000.

3. PATENT APPLICATION

Then there is the small matter of the Patent Application. This gives your idea a reasonable amount of protection, whether we manage to get a Patent granted or not. A Patent Application requires careful wording by a lawyer, and costs between £1000 - £1500.

From this point on, a variety of costs may be incurred (by prior agreement) -prototype development fees, for example.

4. WHAT DO WE GET OUT OF IT?

Inventions will accept a predetermined percentage of any funds you receive as a result of a license negotiated with a manufacturer.

The bottom line is that you need at least £500 to start your invention's journey and at least £2500 to get it to a protected, marketable position.
